Nootka Sound and the Surrounding Waters of Maquinna by Heather Harbord
Nootka Sound is where British Columbia began when Nootka boasts a colorful history of exploration, white slaves, native tribal wars, and various commercial booms including it's own gold rush. Ironically, while the early European traders promoted the annihilation of the sea otter at Nootka, the fates of history quickly removed it from the spotlight. Now at the end of the Gold River road, en route to nowhere, the land and waters of Maquinna retain a majesty and natural beauty that must be experienced. Fortunately, a historical coastal freighter, the M. V. Uchuck III, plies these inlets carrying a growing number of modern explorers on three different adventures to a variety of remote outposts including Friendly Cove, Tahsis, Esperanza, and Kyuquot.
Heather Harbord for twenty years was a profesional librarian in B.C., Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan. Until 1995, Heather was the Chief Librarian in Powell River. In 1980 she was the president of the Canadian Library Association. She is now a freelance writer and avid kayaker who annualy visits old friends and new crannies in the Nootka Sound-Esperanza area, a small corner of paradise.
