Nootka Sound
and the Surrounding Waters of Maquinna
by Heather Harbord

Nootka Sound is where British Columbia began when Captain James Cook arrived here over 200 years ago and met a chief named Maquinna.

Nootka boasts a colorful history of exploration, white slaves, native tribal wars, and various commercial booms including it's own gold rush.

Ironically, while the early European traders promoted the annihilation of the sea otter at Nootka, the fates of history quickly removed it from the spotlight. Now at the end of the Gold River road, en route to nowhere, the land and waters of Maquinna retain a majesty and natural beauty that must be experienced. Fortunately, a historical coastal freighter, the M. V. Uchuck III, plies these inlets carrying a growing number of modern explorers on three different adventures to a variety of remote outposts including Friendly Cove, Tahsis, Esperanza, and Kyuquot.
